TREE CROPS ECONOMIST

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The scientist will be an integral member of ICRAF Cote d’Ivoire team. The position will be administered through ICRAF and will be based at the Cote d’Ivoire Office in Abidjan. Under the dual supervision of WCA Regional Coordinator and the Lead Scientist, Value Chains, Private Sector Engagement and Investments at ICRAF, the Tree Crops Economy Scientist is responsible for leading the scientific research enhancing the smallholder livelihood system through improvements in the value chain of tree crops. He /She will also assist the Country leader in the day to day operations of the Country program. The task includes publishing scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, modelling the economic benefit of the small holder agroforestry systems, development of research projects and strengthening partnerships for enhancing science of agroforestry for better on-farm productivity and economic profitability.
Major Responsibilities
• Develop profitable tree-based agroforestry farm models that promote sustainable management options for cocoa and cashew in Cote d’Ivoire
• Conduct household level surveys on inclusive business models in cocoa and cashew landscape restoration in Cote d’Ivoire
• Support the implementation of a dedicated monitoring, evaluation and learning program
• Publish and present research findings at local, national and international levels.
• Contribute to project development in areas of expertise
• Supervise graduate students.
Profil du poste
Academic and Professional Qualifications:
• PhD in agribusiness, economics, or a related discipline
• Proficiency in English and French (speaking and writing) is required.
• Strong skills in conceptualisation, communication and reporting
• Strong analytical skills including competence in statistical analysis
• Demonstrable competence in modelling specially in the field of agricultural economic
• Working experience in West and Central Africa Region is an asset
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and a multicultural environment
• Experience in project management/coordination, and stakeholder dialogue is an advantage
• Willing to travel frequently across the region
Minimum Work Experience:
• A 1-3 years’ experience in economic/social research on tree or other agricultural products,
The successful candidate should have:
• Sound economic research capacity and its application to solve development problems, with some experience in achieving impact.
• Good communication skills in English and French (both written and spoken) are absolutely necessary; knowledge of other languages is an advantage.
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
• Consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude
• Demonstrates openness to change and ability to manage complex situations
• Demonstrable evidence of the following: critical thinking and problem-solving skills, planning and organizing, decision-making, communication skills, negotiation skills, teamwork, multicultural sensitivity and delegation.
• Experience in working with both a development and research organization is an advantage
• People management, strategic planning and project management skills are advantageous
