The Africa Rice Centre (AfricaRice) is seeking a highly qualified Agronomist to be based at
AfricaRice’s 700 ha experimental station at M’bé, near Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire.
About AfricaRice
AfricaRice is a leading Pan – African rice research organization committed to improving the
livelihoods in Africa though strong science and effective partnerships. AfricaRice is one of the
15 international agricultural research centres that are members of the CGIAR System
Organization (CSO). It is also an Intergovernmental association of African member countries.
Its membership comprises of 26 countries, covering West, Central, East and North African
regions.
Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Program leader; the agronomist will be
responsible for the following main functions:
1. Develop water management technologies for lowland rice to improve water use
efficiency, productivity and profitability. This includes the fine tuning of
technologies already available at AfricaRice.
2. Develop other component technologies tailored to lowland rice with improved
water management.
3. Introduce the technologies developed into farmer’s fields for their validation and
demonstration.
4. Contribute to the out-scaling of the technologies – e.g. providing technical inputs
to dissemination tools such as videos and flyers.
5. Assist research activities conducted through the centre’s Africa-wide research
network with its national partners for agronomy.
6. Contribute to the centre’s capacity strengthening efforts, including training of
national partners and internal staff, and supervision of degree students and shortterm
trainees.
7. Contribute to the centre’s resource mobilization efforts.
8. Undertake any other duties as required by the needs of the centre.
Profil du poste
Qualifications /Selection Criteria
Education: PhD in agronomy or other related fields in agricultural sciences.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of three years postdoctoral working experience.
- Research experience in water management and irrigation engineering for agriculture.
Knowledge and Key Competencies:
- Knowledge on fertilizer management for cereal crops, preferably lowland rice.
- Basic knowledge on crop eco-physiology related to plant – water relations.
- Ability to work in a multicultural team.
- Ability to motivate and manage staff.
- Excellent communication skills, orally and written..
Language
The candidate should communicate fluently (orally and in writing) in English or French with a
good working knowledge of the other language.

o This is an internationally recruited position.
o AfricaRice provides an attractive salary and benefits package and a collegial and gendersensitive

o The initial appointment is for three years with renewal of contract possibility.
