THE ROLE - EHU OBSTETRICIAN AND GYNAECOLOGIST (OBGYN)

 

Role Purpose:
As part of our humanitarian ambition and 2030 global strategy, Save the Children is developing and implementing a new Surge Capacity Model to further improve the efficient deployment of high quality surge staff to support the delivery of our Humanitarian Responses directly and in collaboration with SCI partners.  The model will be a stimulus for other areas of the organisation, demonstrating more collaborative and cost effective ways of working to drive resources closer to children and honour our commitments to sector wide developments including the Grand Bargain and Core Humanitarian Standard.  


People surge is a vital component of our humanitarian responses, providing a much-needed expertise and capacity which can be called upon when it is needed most, helping to ensure high quality and timely humanitarian responses and ultimately saving the lives of children and their families.  The postholder will provide dedicated surge support for all categories of humanitarian response efforts, interim cover for critical roles and capacity building to country and regional office staff and SCI partners within humanitarian contexts around the globe.  When not on deployment the postholder will undertake work at the base location agreed with their subject matter line manager and deployment manager and contribute to the further development of the surge capacity model.

 

The primary responsibility of the Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (OBGYN) is to provide inpatient and outpatient obstetric services in a humanitarian crisis setting. As the key reference point for obstetric complications, they may be on call 24/7 when on deployment. This position will supervise a multi-disciplinary clinical team, ensuring adherence to clinical protocols and the delivery of high quality compassionate clinical care


The OBGYN will provide both technical leadership for their team and direct clinical care, working in close collaboration with international and national staff, notably with the Emergency Health Unit (EHU) Clinical Lead, Senior Midwife and Anaesthetist. The OBGYN is expected to be practice independently in their specialist area and if still in training to be able to work unsupervised in their home country.

 

Key activities :

include 

  • Performance of emergency / elective Obstetric and gynaecological surgery
  • Recognition and management of common obstetric complications
  • Post-operative follow-up in conjunction with an anaesthetist and midwifery team
  • Supervision and capacity building of clinical staff 
  • Provide technical support and assistance in program design and in the development and maintenance of tools, guidelines, monitoring and surveillance tools and datasets 
  • Provide technical support with proposal development, concept notes and internal and external reports and evaluations.


The post holder must be willing to deploy at short notice (<72 hrs) for up to three months at a time
In order to be successful you will bring/have: 
Essential

  • Medical degree, with current registration to practice in country of residence.
  • At least 5 years post-graduation experience (ST5 or equivalent) in relevant speciality of which 2 years should be in a medical setting in a developing country experience or resource deprived environment or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience of managing obstetric complications often associated with humanitarian emergencies e.g. management of infectious diseases in pregnancy, clinical management of rape etc.
  • Familiar with the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for reproductive health in humanitarian settings
  • Advanced life support, paediatric life support and neonatal life support trained. (BEMONC, CEMONC, MISP)
  • Experience supervising medical teams.
  • Ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively
  • Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach staff
  • A high level of written and spoken English.
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy.
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances
  • Excellent self-motivation skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently under difficult conditions.
  • Creativity and the ability to work with limited resources.
  • Previous experience of NGO work in humanitarian settings
  • Proficient either in Spanish, French, Arabic or Portuguese language 


This position can be based anywhere. As it is a surge position, the appointable candidate is expected to deploy up to 80% of their time in a year. In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.
