SCALING UP SCIENTIST

The Position
Based in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, the position holder is responsible for planning, implementing and monitoring the scaling-up of technologies and approaches developed in the Vision for Change project to rehabilitate the cocoa sector in Cote d’Ivoire so that it is equitable and sustainable and additionally act as Deputy Project Leader to manage the day-to-day operations of the Vision for Change project.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Coordinate the implementation of the project as per approved project document
2. Serve as the liaison between ICRAF and stakeholders on all issues related to the project
3. Coordinate the activities of the project team composed of ICRAF staff, partners and associate partners;
4. Develop and implement a programme for scaling up of technologies and approaches for:
• Improving productivity, profitability and sustainability of cacao production systems
• Combatting, preventing or rehabilitating CSSVD affected cocoa farms
• Supporting the rehabilitation of degraded forest and cocoa landscape
• Supporting the empowerment of cocoa communities
5. Develop and implement a dedicated monitoring and evaluation program;
6. Organize and participate in conferences, workshops, seminars and study tours
7. Support fund raising for interventions required of the project
8. Facilitate communication using various media to raise awareness on good agricultural practices in cocoa management and rehabilitation of cocoa farms amongst policy-makers, biodiversity experts, civil society, NGOs, community groups, educators and opinion makers;
9. Facilitate reviews, baseline studies and cocoa production assessments in Cote d’Ivoire (and West Africa) and use these to develop priorities and produce participatory and integrated plans;
10. Liaise with and support the donor, Mars Inc and the Govt. of Cote d’Ivoire in their joint efforts to rehabilitate the cocoa sector in Cote d’Ivoire. This may include outreach and support to other forms of collective action on this agenda including World Cocoa Foundation, World Bank, African Development Bank, FARA to name a few.
11. Perform any other related duties as may be requested by the Management

Required Academic and Professional Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in business, management, economics, agriculture, forestry or related field.
• Up to ten (10) years’ work in tropical countries in field research, project development and at least five (5) years of progressive experience in managing scaling-up of technologies and approaches with demonstrable positive results.
Required Skills and Competencies:
• Experience in working in both a development and research organization an advantage.
• Experience in practicing bottom-up approaches, especially related to farmer innovation would be an advantage.
• Track record of exemplary management of complex, multi-stakeholder projects and programs.
• People management, strategic planning, risk management, project management software, and project management skills
• Shares knowledge and experience; good communicator and facilitator
• Consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude
• Demonstrates openness to change and ability to manage complex situations
• Remains calm, in control and good humoured even under pressure
• Willingness to travel frequently to support partners
• Demonstrable evidence of the following: critical thinking and problem-solving skills, planning and organizing, decision-making, communication skills, negotiation skills, teamwork, multicultural sensitivity and delegation.
