SOS Children’s Villages International is a Global Organisation established in 1949. SOS Children's Villages is working globally to meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of orphaned and vulnerable children. SOS Children’s Villages international works thorough member associations in over 133 countries worldwide. The International Regional Office for West and Central Africa based in Dakar, Senegal directly supports member associations in 18 countries and is currently expanding its professional regional team. We are looking to recruit the following bi-lingual (French and English) staff:

ADVOCACY ADVISOR (DAKAR)

Mission:
Working location: DAKAR, SENEGAL (with 30% field travel)
Contract duration: 12 months
Start date: September 2017

SOS Children’s Village IOR WCAF is looking for a Regional Advocacy Advisor WCAF. He/She will build capacity for advocacy at national and regional levels; improving knowledge-sharing, visibility and representation; ensure the coordination of all advocacy activities in WCAF region through proactive communication with Member Associations and General Secretariat.

Tasks and Responsibilities:
• 40% MA support
• 25% Knowledge management and learning
• 15% External representation
• 10% Cooperation with Liaison and Advocacy
• 10% Inter department collaboration

Strengthen regional advocacy

  • Ensure development of a clear regional strategy on advocacy in line with SOS’s 2030 strategy
  • Finds information on important activities and events of the civil society, international organizations, NGOs.
  • Leads the development of tools, systems and structures to support advocacy
  • Liaises with partners, recommend, organize and prepare meetings with key potential partner organizations
  • Drives regional planning processes in this area of work, facilitates relevant sessions of regional forums.
  • Actively participates in the SOS Global Advocacy Network (GAN), representing WCAF

Supporting MAs for national advocacy

  • Coordinate, support and ensure the consistency of MA strategic and annual planning on advocacy
  • Provides information, advice and expertise in the field of work, in line with the priorities identified for GSC and MAs
  • Tracks and records the work within the Member Associations, through reviewing progress reports & statistics, other monitoring & evaluation reports, and regular contact with relevant staff and country/programme visits
  • Advises national focal persons on the development of required resources (tools, systems & structures), through relevant regional forums and processes

Profil du poste

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master or Bachelor degree in Social Work, Human Rights, Child Protection or relevant field
  • Extensive experience, progressively responsible, working in child protection/governance programming with a strong advocacy content, preferably in the Central and West Africa Region
  • Proven representation and advocacy skills.
  • Familiarity with key international standards for humanitarian work (e.g. Child Protection Minimum Standards, SPHERE, HAP Principles, etc.) and international documents related to children rights (e.g. UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, UN Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children) as well as African regional entities such as African Union, ECOWAS
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English and French (Portuguese or Spanish desirable)
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching
  • Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, definition of a clear way forward and ensuring buy in
  • Ability to present complex information in a succinct and compelling manner
  • Commitment to SOS Children’s Villages values, including willingness to abide by and enforce the Child Protection policy
