Job description

The world’s largest chocolate company is hiring a sustainability manager to lead its activities in Ivory Coast.  Ivory Coast produces over 30% of the world’s cocoa and is the most important cocoa origin for Barry Callebaut.  The Sustainability Manager will be responsible for managing a multi-million dollar budget applied to programs including:

  • Management of the certification project (Rainforest Alliance, UTZ, Starbucks) with more than 45 farmer groups (incl. operational planning, audit planning)
  • Development and extension of the sourcing platform called Quality Partner Program (QPP) to achieve required bean volumes and other key performance objectives (such as farmers trained)
  • Farmer training in good agricultural practice and yield enhancement
  • Development and implementation of a Yield Enhancement strategy to increase farm productivity via innovative agricultural practices (e.g. crop diversification, accelerated compost and grafting)
  • Management of demonstration farms
  • Management of the controlled fermentation project with more than 80 farmer groups (incl. traceability system)
  • Supervision of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects such as construction of water wells and primary schools
  • Systematic monitoring and evaluation of program impacts
  • Development and implementation of a sustainability strategy for Ivory Coast in line with the Barry Callebauts’ global Cocoa Horizons initiative based upon three pillars (farmer practices, farmer health and farmer education)
  • Budget development and cost control of the QPP and Cocoa Horizons programs
  • Lead a team of 25 to 30 persons (agricultural engineers/technicians, sociologists and geographers)
  • Support to the development of an annual training program and diverse curricula for the team and farmer groups
  • Support to the Geographical Information System (GIS) Coordinator and the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Analyst to establish a detailed database and an efficient M&E system
  • Establish a strong network with stakeholders, local non-governmental organizations and other technical partners all involved in the sustainable cocoa supply chain
  • Facilitate client visits and give support to client initiatives in the Ivory Coast
  • Organize monthly team meetings and submit weekly reports on progress and challenges

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor/Master’s degree preferably in relevant field such as Agronomy, Development Economics, Environmental Science or other related disciplines
  • Extensive work experience of more than 3 years in sustainable agriculture
  • Experience in Africa is a must.  Experience in cocoa is a plus
  • The candidate must possess exceptional project management skills and demonstrate the ability to coordinate interrelated activity streams spanning large groups
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Dynamic personality with strong managerial skills and the capacity to relate to individuals from different cultures and back grounds
  • Fluent in French and English
  • Willingness to be based in Abidjan and travel within the region (20%)
  • Hands-on mentality, flexible and self-motivated
